The St. Johns is one of the great bass rivers in the country, and East Palatka puts you in the middle of it. The river is unusual because it flows north, slow and wide, with grass flats, creek mouths, and backwaters that hold largemouth bass all year. Locals and tournament anglers call this stretch the Bass Capital of the World, and Palatka regularly hosts bass tournaments right off the riverfront.
Where to fish
You have three strong options within a short drive of the house. The St. Johns itself, right out front, fishes well along the grass lines and around docks and creek mouths early and late in the day. Rodman Reservoir, a short drive south, is a trophy largemouth factory known for giant fish holding in the flooded timber and hydrilla. Lake George, the second largest lake in Florida, is an easy run and gives you miles of open water, shell bars, and grass to work. Dunn's Creek, which connects the river to Crescent Lake, is another quiet spot worth a morning.
When to come
Winter and early spring are prime time for big bass as fish move shallow to spawn, roughly December through March. That same window is excellent for speckled perch, also called crappie, which stack up in the creeks and deeper bends. Spring and summer bring strong bluegill and shellcracker action on the beds. If you like variety, the river also sees a seasonal blue crab and shrimp run that locals look forward to every year.
What to bring
Bring or rent a boat, since access to the best water is on the water. Soft plastics, flipping baits, and lipless crankbaits all earn their keep here, and live wild shiners are the local favorite for trophy bass in the cooler months. A current Florida freshwater fishing license is required, and you can buy one online before you arrive. If you want to learn the water fast, several guides run trips out of the Palatka area and can put you on fish on day one.
Stay right on the water
The easiest way to fish this stretch is to stay on it. Sunset River House has a 175-foot private dock and boathouse where you can keep your boat ready, clean your catch, and be on the water before sunrise. After a day of fishing, the back deck and fire pit are waiting, and the sunsets over the river are hard to beat. If you are planning a tournament trip or a long weekend chasing bass, this is your spot. Check our availability and book direct.
